The Positive Power of Dance
Our dance class is always full of magic, but something extra special happened recently. As the music ended and the class was about to finish, the children surprised us all - they didn’t want it to end! Together, they playfully stopped their teacher from leaving.
This beautiful moment shows just how much our children adore their dance sessions. Sbonelo has truly mastered the art of blending teaching with fun… but we believe there is more to it.
That dance is more than art….
Studies show that dance interventions significantly lower symptoms of anxiety and depression by releasing endorphins, regulating cortisol (stress hormone), and providing emotional expression without words.
Furthermore, in areas where trauma levels are high, and where access to formal mental health care, may be limited or stigmatized, dance offers an accessible, culturally grounded, and non-verbal tool for emotional regulation and resilience.
Dance is more than art, it is therapy!
Furthermore, did you know… Group dancing increases oxytocin (the “bonding hormone”), strengthens empathy, and enhances social cohesion. Research shows synchronized movement in dance fosters trust and collective identity, therefore building social connection and belonging.
For members of marginalised communities, shared dance experiences can reduce feelings of isolation and foster solidarity, empowerment, and collective healing.
Dance is more than art: it is community-building!
AND there is more… Did you know… Dance engages multiple brain regions, improving memory, attention, and neuroplasticity. It is linked to reduced risk of cognitive decline and improved emotional flexibility. It boosts cognitive function and emotional resilience.
In marginalised settings, where chronic stress and trauma can impair concentration and coping, dance provides a joyful way to strengthen mental resilience, self-esteem, and problem-solving abilities.
In short: Dance is more than art; it is brain health in motion!
