“Why has what is so grotesquely abnormal become normalised to us in this country.” GRACA MACHEL

South Africa offers us some of the worst statistics on earth.
Our GBV numbers, income inequality, child rape, murder rate, corruption, and more are up there in the very shameful top.

It’s depressing, and frankly overwhelming to be confronted by this constantly: in our social media feeds, headlines, and conversations.

The danger is that the overwhelm can numb us into a space of checking out. We feel that the problem is too big, and we can’t make a difference.

But we can.

Because a difference made in one life has a ripple effect that we can’t put numbers to.

May we choose to see those numbers, but remember that they represent precious lives. Of moms, children, colleagues, people walking around and among us.

May we not be numb or overwhelmed, but ask ourselves what small difference we can make, to even one life. Or who can we support who is tending to those lives?

It starts with me.

Trauma offers two options in terms of how we will move on: We can become a Victim or a Victor.
